For two years, Obama played the golf course of presidential politics with the ice-cold self-assuredness of a Tiger Woods. But since securing the nomination, he's made a series of blunders that could jeopardize his chances in November.

Wow, what a piece of garbage this article is.... This is trash writing at its best... Even down to the last quote from who-knows??? (no partisan named at all) that Obama is prideful....
How about talking about McCains pridefulness that is EXTREMELY OVERWHELMING... all you have to do is google pride and McCain or go to You Tube and search McCain and Pride and what you will pull up is videos of McCain turning his back and walking away when anyone asks him a question he doesnt wish to answer.... At least Obama stands his ground and answers, McCain just turns his back and walks away...
There is no doubt who this author is voting for... I am just Ashamed that MSNBC has to so blantantly play neutral for both sides that they even publish an article like this... to counter MCCAIN AND PALIN'S obviously lies and failures, they have to scrape up garbage like this...

Obama supporters are way past ready for our candidate - as wonderfully admirable, intelligent and respectful as he's been - to WALLOP McCain with repetitive hard punches. Senator ... a pig with lipstick? Please. In your own words, is that the best you can do?
Senator Obama, what do you need to do to get Bill and Hillary engaged?
Do that.
Just do it.
They know how to fight Republican smears and win.

So Howard, you're telling us that Obama's basic problem is that he's uppity? I'd be careful there.
A lot of great leaders have been confident to the verge of egomania. It can be a good trait.
Then again, some presidents, including the current one, have been raging egomaniacs without having the slightest justification for it.

Fineman made some good points, hindsight is 20/20. I always thought that not taking McCain up on the town hall meetings was over cautious. But at the time McCain had nothing to lose and it seemed an unnecessary risk. However, it would have defined the race early and lessened the impact of any Republican antics such as this Palin pick.
Obama is underusing the Clinton's; this is very clear. Clinton, either of them, could have delivered Arkansas and solidified Florida and maybe put Texas into play. I know the latter is a stretch, but I think Texas is fairly fed up with the Republicans although, so far, they have suffered the least in the economic problems of the nation.
Fineman's comments about Obama's pride is editorial BS and borders on calling him "uppity". Fineman usually refrains from such poor judgment, but it is a common thread. In this case he seems to be blaming the mistakes on Obama's supposed hubris which I think is patently false. The errors made were made because of conditions on the ground to borrow a Republican flag phrase. There seemed nothing to gain in the town meetings and the Clinton's will always be a double-edged sword. Now the clock is running and the Republican operatives are going to use every unsavory trick in their formidable bag-o-tricks to steal this election from the people one more time.

I'm quessing there will not be an edit about McCain's mistakes because the biggest mistake is that he's the clone of Bush and how does he rid himself of the fact he's voted with Bush more than 90% of the time. Whatever mistakes Obama may have made are minor compared to the GOP's. A fabricated war that McCain supported has accountability! McCain can't win on the issues so its slash and burn Obama with smears and lies. Wake-up GOP, we are not buying your slime tactics...NOT THIS TIME!!!!!!!!

All the woes of Obama in one article. Pure Trash !!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about all the woes McCain brought to the ENTIRE NATION when he chose Palin, the MOST DIVISIVE POLITICAL CANDIDATE EVER !!!!! Look, she has sparked mini-wars everywhere and made this election an election of values in divided and polarized America !!!!!

Fineman refraigned from mentioning that Obama is better than the LYING, DECEITFUL, SELF-ADULATING HYPOCRITES who abandoned their call for experience and have switched to a CHANGE Washington campaign. I'm sorry but lies, deceit and swift-boating are just more of the same. I don't profess to have a crystal ball about the elections, but in my book, McCain will always be looser. I see no honor in anything thing he says or does only vicious ugly insular opportunistic greed. In which kitchen does Mccain sit at the table (sexist remark coming: while Cindy does the dishes) and think about YOU?

No matter how many woes Obama has. We, the Democrat, will always cast our vote for our Democrat dream ticket: Obama - Bi(nla)den 8002. This dream ticket will change the world forever. EMPTY CHANGES WE CAN BELIEVE IN. YES WE CAN LOOSE.
Awesome! Somebody finally sees how the Dems blindly follow the snake oil salesman. When the election comes around, I might just vote "Present" just like Osama, er Obama.

You libs commenting here are daft!
This article states exactly the reasons non coolaid drinkers are turned off by Obama. You dolts dont understand this and think he is slamming "The One". You are so drunk by him thank you really dont understand what the "other" side sees and doesn't see in BO.
I only hope BO doesn't see this article and adjust his strategy.
- 3 votes
Well how do you say it. Success has a thousand fathers, a failure.......... I just hope Obama wins. All these armchair analyses wouldn't then matter.
It's easy to play Monday morning quarterback, and that's exactly what Fineman is doing. McCain is doing better now not because of most of the things Fineman mentioned, but because he's got Sarah Palin on the ticket (and the increasing support of a fawning media). As for the Clinton's, they were never going to pull out the all stops for Obama no matter how much he groveled to them. Their egos want Obama to lose, so Hillary can run again in four years.
Fineman's "analysis" is just one more indication that the media is now pushing McCain/Palin full steam. When they began giving Palin a free pass to do and say the most outrageous and sometimes untrue things, I knew Obama was in the tank. I think history will judge the media harshly for failing to subject McCain and Palin to anywhere near the scrutiny it has given Obama and Biden.
I'm not looking forward to a McCain/Palin Presidency. However, at their first State dinner, they need to have as honored guests members of the media. What better way to honor those who have put you in office?

he's voted with Bush more than 90% of the time
I keep hearing this, but I can't figure out what it means.
It can't be literal, because the President doesn't vote with the Senate. It can't be figurative, because McCain is known for 'reaching across the aisle' and doing things that infuriate conservatives.
Can someone please enlighten me?

AMERICAN PEOPLE TO BRING THEM INFORMATION OF PUBLIC CONCERN AND
INFORMATION ABOUT A WOMEN WHO MAY BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT IS OF PUBLIC

WHAT IS AT STAKE FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, YOUR ARTICLE IS BENEATH US ALL!

Some of Fineman's best analysis and writing. He nailed it spot on. His analysis explains most of what we are seeing.
Obama first accepted then declined public funding as McCain has agreed to and now Obama is beholding to special interests funding his money-hungry campaign. BIG mistake!

Howard, how about discussing the fact that McBush/Palin have yet to discuss ISSUES. I'm not trying to be Obama's best friend nor do I care about his personality or arrogance, I'm concerned that he is capable and intelligent enough to address our ISSUES!!! Remember, we're not picking a Homecoming King and Queen but a President/VP who can bring this country back out of the sewer.

My first impression and then my second and third was positive toward Obama and I called him "an outstanding orator". He came across as quite articulate. I was impressed.
Then, I saw the Saddleback interview and his hesitating and faltering and I began to watch. All of my early impressions were news clips of him making prepared speeches. As I watched him in more impromptu Q & A, he is much more faltering.
I began to see why he accepted then turned down the town hall debates with McCain. I am not sure now how intelligent he is. He is not quick with unprepared answers. Maybe I have over estimated him.
Re: Voting with Bush 90% of the time - it's quite simple.
The White House (meaning, ultimately, the POTUS) has a position on virtually every bill that comes before the Senate, that's well known to the members and regular observers on the Hill. There are dozens of people in the White House whose job is to coordinate policy with Congress.
The Republicans almost always vote in perfect lock-step for the White House's "side" of each bill. 90% of the time, John McCain also votes "with the President." Its true of most Republicans, even moderates like Olympia Snow. When push comes to shove, none of them deserve to be called mavericks.
I sometimes wish the Democrats could get that kind of unquestioning partisan obedience out of their members.

"Devastating"?
To the people of Iraq and their children that will now grow-up in a free society or "devastating" to Saddam Hussein?
Or devastating to the families here in America who won't ever see their loved ones again, or the children who don't even know their mothers and fathers who are still over their fighting for periods way too long in armor way too weak. Or devastating for the wounded that lay in hospitals without the proper care or help, even if they would or do have it - their lives will never be the same again. Or maybe devastating for the Troops over there who have died already for a civil war between warring tribes that will still be warring way after we all here on this forum are dead. It has nothing to do with winning and losing - it's a lifestyle of a people we can't understand. That kind of devastating maybe?
Neither is peace - violent. The middle east will never have peace it is not their way or their desire - neither is it OUR business. We just want their oil and have our noses where it doesn't belong. We're were also on Bush's "daddy's revenge" mission.
you go Howard it is about time someone told the truth about Obama.

Some of your points I understand. When are we going to here McCain's faults? The double standards are amazing in this election cycle. Did you have to say pride? Is he suppose to walk around doubting every move he makes? If he would have chose Clinton, folks would have been in an uproar. Can you give the guy a break? He didn't need to FOLLOW McCain around at Town Halls to care about the people. I do agree he needs to attack McCain and his policies but some folks fight fair and others fight nasty. McCain is the latter and does not get my respect for it.

Palin opened this can of worms with her lipstick on a moose. It's a common saying in politics. This from Newsweek posted today: The Politics of Stupidity:
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/09/10/the-politics-of-stupidity.aspx
The point, of course, was get everyone speculating about whether or not Obama had committed a heinous act "sexism" and change the day's debate from education to gender insensitivity. Never mind that "you can put lipstick on a pig" is an old idiomatic expression. Never mind that Obama was talking about McCain--not Palin--when he used it. Never mind that Obama also said that "you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called 'change,' [but] it's still gonna stink after eight years." Never mind that McCain's former press secretary, Torie Clarke, wrote a book called "Lipstick on a Pig: Winning in the No-Spin Era." Never mind that Elizabeth Edwards once compared McCain's health care plan to "painting lipstick on a pig." Never mind that Obama has used the phrase before, claiming last September that Gen. David Petraeus "has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig" in Iraq. And never mind that McCain said the same thing of Hillary Clinton's health care plan the following month, characterizing it as "eerily" similar to her failed 1993 proposal. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig," McCain said, "but it's still a pig."
Never mind all that. According to McCain, Obama wasn't doing what he, Clarke, Edwards and Obama himself had done before--you know, just using a colorful American metaphor. No. In McCain's view, Obama was actually dumb enough to mount the stage, face the cameras and boldly announce that Sarah Palin is a porker. Or at least that's what McCain--a man whose party has long decried the routine accusations of "sexism" and "racism" associated with identity politics, and whose VP said earlier this year that playing the gender card "doesn't do us any good, women in politics"--is hoping that the rest of us are dumb enough to believe. Next thing you know, he'll accuse his opponent of calling Palin a fish.
"But if I were an Obama partisan I would be worried that his mistakes have a common thread - pride."
Let's read that again... r e a l s l o w...
"But if I were an Obama partisan..."
Is this unintentional humor? Someone tell Rush...
Howard, come out of the closet. Please.

Hi Howard
it is a shame to accuse obama of all these things. none of your accusations are true. a glaring example is that you claim obama does not have specific policies, how about tax cut for people earning less than 250K, college money for service and many more. it is beneath you to do that. we seen through you already but for god sake respect your profession of being analyst or be bold and come out and say you are one the "hardworking blue collar workers--- a code for white racist" who can tolerate a black man being their president. yes obama is not perfect but what he has done is beyond expectations. he will be fine and will win this election alright without your advise. thank you
Why is McCain and Palin getting a pass? For the last week, all I have heard is the same speech , I heard at the convention. Please have them "change" their message, I am bored to death. That will help me. On the subject of sexism, they are accusing Obama. Why won't they check out if she is a racist.
- 1 vote
Exactly, where's the pitbull with lipstick? Surely the pitbull can take on the pig.
Howard, how do you know that Obama didnot use that joke against Palin. Are you his speach writer? All you had to do was listen to the uproar from the crowd and you knew they got the joke. Infact, they were roaring when he said "lipstick", waiting for the punch line.
Howard, do not start tainting your reputation on sticking up for a candidate. Praise Obama when he does something right and point out his errors. On this one, you missed by a mile and everyone watched you drop the ball. Your better than that, start acting like it.

I'm wondering where the variation, lipstick on a moose came from? It appears to be a common saying in politics - even by McCain. The campaign continues to use stump lies and advertising distortions by making political mountains out of molehills as they AVOID talking about the real issues: the American People and their interests. This from Newsweek posted today: The Politics of Stupidity:
http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/09/10/the-politics-of-stupidity.aspx

Where to start. The author buys into the narrative that he and others have created for Obama and then at other times tells Obama to move out of that narrative and then move back into it.
Next he chastises (sorry if I spelled that wrong) Obama for not pressing McCain on some of the character points his campaign has brought forward. What then is the job of the press? Do they just bring it up or to they plan on asking McCain about any of this and if they do are they going to let him off easy with the same old tired and lame lines? How blissfully unaware of themselves are these fools? I once wanted to be a journalist, but I wouldn't dream of it now if I had to swallow my pride each day and play along with our politicians in this silly game of trying to manipulate and deceive the public. They do the same up here in Canada. I feel real bad for any American caught up in this garbage and seeking solutions for their predicament and not recieving any help through any means that was meant to assist them.
Obama is not perfect but he still exhibits the characteristics that have inspired millions to believe that faith in your government and faith in themselves to get America out of the mess its in, is indeed possible. He has gotten this far by not cowering to people like the Clintons and now you want him to turn around and pull down his pants for them? He has written his own narrative and he intends to stick to that narrative because it's as close as we can get to the truth from a politician as we can get these days. That's better then pride. It's strength of character. That demonstrates leadership abilities to me.
The press and media owe you more than this America. In absence of that, I beg of you to encourage those of you who buy into the tripe they are forced to swallow to close their mouths so to speak and look elsewhere for the answers. Read what's on the man's web site and McCain's too and see what applies to you. Be wary, it's not like Obama and McCain are not capable of being dishonest. Look elsewhere if you must but be certain. This is not a flip decision you make and it certainly should not be influenced by the hack author who brought up this brutal piece today.

Spanish equivalent.
The equivalent of the PIG LIPSTICK refrain/proverb in Spanish is:
Even though the monkey dresses in silk, she remains a MONKEY.
Check in the internet, (google) the Spanish equivalent:
Aunque la mona se vista de seda,
mona se queda.
However, I learned it as a child as:
El mono, aunque se vista de oro y seda, sigue siendo mono.
=
The monkey, even though he dresses in silk and gold, continues to look like a monkey.
Obamba just opened himself, and all the black race, to the most feared comparison and implication of the refrain ....
In Spanish the refrain/proverb means that an ugly person (phisically or in character), no matter how much rich adornments she covers herself with cannot change her real appearance. Plus other more sophisticated and truthful connotations.
Stop it. Who cares what the Spanish equivalent is, we speak English here. I don't want to know, nor do I care what it is in Spanish. Who brought it up? Who said anything about Spanish? I didnt ask for a Spanish lesson. Thats a whole nother problem here. Lets stick with this subject. If you want to speak Spanish, go to the Spanish website, don't do it here. The English version means the same thing, ugly person, dressed up, yeah we get it. Now drop it.

I, for one, found the monkey wearing silk post interesting. Thank you, juliog11.
Did Governor Palin really make a racial slur and sexist remarks about Obama and Hillary after the Primaries.. Reportedly she said this in a public restaurant. "Did Sambo beat that bit-h?" I have seen this in several emails. Is it true? As a black female I find It very offensive. Why is this not checked out?

Another story from a single anonymous source who doesn't want to be named. Take it with a grain of salt.
Are you kidding me...this is the typical liberal inanity that makes people call you all whiners. If you truly believe this then you are as pathetic as the person who made up that quote.
Actually somebody made it up in another newsvine article and thetruthshallwhatever person is just copying it.
There is enough wrong with Palin that's truthful, that we don't need horrible stupid lies.
Not to mention, if he HAD taken public financing funds everyone would have been outraged because he would have had only $84 million to work with. Now at least he has control of his message rather then leaving it to the DNC to define for him or 527 groups. He should fight back again McCain/Palin. It is terrible that they can just sell out right lies and people believe them. Obama will fight back. He is a quick study and a really smart guy. I can't imagine that after beating the Clinton's out of the nomination, he's going to just sit back and let Sarah "barracuda" shred everything he's been working for. He's much smarter then that. Just wait until she has her sit down, I think at that point people who just liked McCain for Palin will take another look at the situation and realize that she's not who she claims to be. Obama will keep going after them on the stump and in interviews.

My friend... Obama HAS sat down with the media. He has been doing interviews on the national stage since AT LEAST 2004. Dems aren't whining, so don't play it that way. We are fighting to take back our country that the Republicans have virtually destroyed.
And if you are referring to the lipstick comment by Obama? Um.. McCain has used the same line. There is no DOUBLE STANDARD. If you actually pay attention- and I don't mean, just read blogs all day- you would realize that.

I was up early this morning listening to Joe in the Morning(?) They had Pat Buchanan on. Who was way off base, and made to much out of nothing. My impression is they seem to glorifying on that "stupid statement about the pig. It much to do about nothing. I think the media and McCain needs to apologize to the public for distracting us from the issues, and making a mockery out nothing. They seem to be helping McCain's agenda.
Apparently the truth will set you free gets her info from the funny pages and spam emails...and then believes it like its fact....but she wants to ignore the Dem machine working to destroy the only true American on both tickets...Palin...
Bottom line is Palin is the threat they dont want to see...and its working....I say GOOD....keep bashing her and America will embrace.. her....Hey look at the recent polls.....it just sunk Obama's boat.

What's the deal with Palin. All she has done so far is give the same canned speech over and over again and throw in a few lies. She will not give an interview untill she is entirly indoctrinated in the Republican talking point's and finds a reporter that will stick to the prepared script.
You people remind me of Bush when he looked into Putin's eye's and saw the soul of a good man.
That's all it took. He was convinced.
- 1 vote
What lies , Ray. What are you making up now?
You think Bush was fooled by Putin? ...keep your enemies closer. Ever hear that. Wheres the missile base going? Who's advisors are in Georgia? You think you know too much.
- 2 votes
I think you made a couple of fair points but lets face it you miss the real point... McCain has surged in the pols because he sold his soul to the lunatic fringe on the right led by Rush Limbaugh and his fellow Christian blowhards. McCain's new campaign of telling the same lies day after day even after they have been proven to be false has been successful. Apparently it's true that Karl Rove is now advising McCain. Why this works is that the news media is apparently afraid of the RNC and they rarely set the record straight. Than on top of that you add an attractive woman candidate to the ticket who happens to make George Bush seem like a flaming liberal, you have her read the same lies that McCain spouts every day, and than sequester her away so that no one can actually question her to see if she is qualified to become the vp. The right wing is happy and the lazy American voters who don't bother to seek out the truth are satisfied hearing these political fairytales that the Republicans are spouting and in the end we end up with four more years of disaster and will wonder how it happened again.
Don't fault Obama's campaign , the real problem for him is the press lacking the guts to fight for the truth, the the insanity of most of the Christian right who think they alone speak with God and follow his plan, ( very similar to the Taliban) and most of all the lazy voters in this country who allow liars and frauds to get their vote. It makes me sick!

Fineman is dead on with the complaints about Obama. His arrogance with not taking public financing was done clearly because he thought he could get tons more money from his minions. Now, I see they are sending out emails trying to get money they thought they'd be getting from Clinton supporters. Also, for someone squawking change at every turn putting an entrenched politico like Biden on the ticket certainly caused some to wonder what kind of change he's talking about. The bottom line, McCain and Palin are telling people what they want to hear, just like Obama is. Obama can rant and rave all he wants, but people are finally seeing the true Obama and are moving to McCain. If that's not true, then please explain how surveys across the board are showing Obama losing support and McCain gaining it.
